To avoid the "summer slide" of skills attrition, we encourage and endorse summer reading per grade level. The list below is the required reading and skills work for the Summer 2024. Individual teachers will assess understanding in a variety of ways as the year begins. Secondary students should expect a test and/or essay and/or in-depth graded discussion over the book during the first week of school.
RAZ-Kids is available for summer reading. Parents are encouraged to work with children on RAZ-Kids throughout the summer.
First Grade:
READING: Participate in our Reading Bingo Challenge. Print this handout, complete four consecutive blocks for "Bingo," and win a prize! The four completed blocks can be arranged across, down, or diagonally. You may color the completed square, let the parent initial the square, or mark an "x" on the completed square.
Bonus Challenge: Fill the board! This challenge is due on Friday, August 8.
Second Grade:
READING: Your child should read to a parent ONE chapter book from a series listed below. In addition to this requirement, please encourage your child to read additional books from this list, such as RAZ KIDS or any other books you have at home. Allowing them to choose the books they enjoy will inspire them to read more.

Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant
Moderate Chapter Books
Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne

The 4th-grade summer reading requirement is to read a CHAPTER book of your choice this summer. The book should be at least 125 pages long and be 4th-grade appropriate. The only book you should NOT choose is The Wild Robot. That will be our first class novel. You must have your book in class the first week of school. (If you are using a library book, be sure you can check it out for that week.)
Use this list if you need some help finding a book. Parents: Please help your student choose wisely.
