LEAF COLLECTION PROJECT (130 POINTS)

Assigned:  September 12, 2008

Due Date:  September 29, 2008

(All collections are due by 3:30 p.m. on 9/29/08.  Please be sure to have yours in on time.  You may turn them in early.)

1.       Collect a leaf from 10 different trees (No conifers.  Examples:  pine, cypress, spruce, hemlock.  Only broad leaf trees!)  Be sure it will fit on the size paper you will be using.  I prefer you just pick one up off of the ground.  Do Not pick ones that are dried out or your pressed leaves will not work, they will crumble!

2.      Write down the location of the tree (Example:  Ag Center in Jackson, TN) and take a picture of the tree.  (You will probably need to have something in the picture to help you remember which tree is in the picture.  Example:  a blue ball, a hat, a purse, you holding a sign…)

3.      Put the leaf between two paper towels and then in between pages of big books to help them dry flat (if you have a leaf press you may use it).

4.      You will need to give both the common name and scientific names of the tree.  I will have several books in the classroom that you may use.  Also, the internet is a great source for this information.  They are already labeled at the Ag Center or go to a garden center that sells trees.)

5.      You will need to describe the leaf margin, venation, and arrangement for each specimen in your collection.  We will learn about these as we go through the chapter.

6.       Set up for Leaf Collection Notebook:  Be sure to be neat, accurate, follow directions, and creative in your notebook!
