Junior First Grade Summer Reading Requirements: Junior first grade does not require your child to read a specific set of books over the summer, although we do encourage parents and children to engage in 10-15 minutes of reading each day. Whether your child is reading to you or listening to a story being read to them, they are building vocabulary and comprehension skills. After your child has read or listened to a story please take the time to ask your child questions about it. For example: Who or what is the story about?, Do you think this story is real or make-believe? (What clues in the story helped you to figure this out?) Tell me what you remember about this story? (What happend at the beginning, middle and end?) Ask if they can sequence events from the story (What happened after the wolf blew the first pig's house down?) Questioning children after reading will help to set a purpose for reading and help to develop comprehension skills which are critical in your child's reading development.
