Jackson Christian Middle School
7th Grade Summer Reading Requirements 2009
All 7th graders for the 2009-2010 school year will be required to read the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred Taylor. This novel will be an integral part of our language arts studies at the beginning of the school year. Since class discussions and assessments in August will focus on this text, I expect students to comprehend and retain information from the reading. Students need to pay particular attention to setting, characters, plot, and theme.
In addition to the required novel, 7th graders need to choose one of the novels from the list below as an additional book to read. Make sure to choose one that you have not read before. The novel that you choose from the following list will count as your first AR grade, and that is why it is so important to choose a novel that you have not read before. You will need to write a paragraph summary over each chapter of this novel in a composition notebook. This notebook will serve as your Summer Reading project and will be worth 50 points.
In short, here are the two things to do concerning Summer Reading:
1. Read Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred Taylor.
2. Choose one novel from the list below and do paragraph summaries over each chapter as outlined above.
