Jackson Christian School 5th Grade

Summer Reading

Recommended Books for 5th Grade Summer Reading

Dear future 5th grade students,

Now that your summer vacation has begun, you will have plenty of free time.  I want you to enjoy your time off: kick back, relax, and pick up a few good books.

Kids who read succeed!  Research shows that the amount of time students spend reading for fun is the key predictor of their academic achievement.  This means that reading a lot this summer will help you in school this fall!

Jackson Christian Elementary school requires fifth graders to read at least 3 books each summer break.  One of these must be Because of Winn Dixie.  You may purchase a copy at the Book Lady and should bring it with you on the first day of class.  The other two chapter books may be from the enclosed lists or your own choice.  Since not all books are written by Christian authors, I ask that parents help you choose wisely.

Research has also found that when reading for pleasure, it is better to choose books that are a little below your current reading level.  Each book on the recommended list has its reading level.  You may check the schools AR website to check other books you choose.  All books chosen must be on third grade level or above and worth two points or more.
